53: And I Have The Tag To Prove It

Image
Yet another week in the service of the Lord!! Let's dive in. We had a lot of quirky experiences this week: An Argentine lady threatened me and my family because we were in contact with her boyfriend. It is a long story, but it ended up with us blocking their number and praying we don't run into them in the streets anytime soon (which is more than likely because Carcarañá is not a big town). I made a deal with one of the elders who works in the office that I would give him my tennis shoes when I finished my mission if he would get me a customized pocket tag for my Libro de Mormon. I wanted my mission nickname on it as a good keepsake from Argentina. So now I officially have a tag that proves that I was called Hermana Trash. Got to do exchanges with Hna Ugazio in Funes! Apparently Messi is building a house there and that's where he will live when he retires. We didn't find it, but if we do, I will be knocking and giving him a pamphlet.  Made friends with a local golden re...

52: Un Año

Image
To be as cheesy as possible and celebrate hitting 1 year as a missionary, I wanted to share with y'all 12 things I have learned in my mission so far.  1. Work! All my life, my hard work has been clearly and directly translated into numbers. GPA, test scores, miles biked, number of tacos consumed, etc. But oh man, I have learned how to work hard when you don't see the results of it. Sometimes you give it your all for weeks to get one person to church, and you get a goose egg 0 at the end of it. What I learned is that the Lord loves effort. At the end of the day, I will feel more satisfied with my work if I did my best and centered on Christ than if I had incredible numbers with no real effort put into it.  2.LOVE! I think 95% of the world's problems would be solved if we just loved each other a little more. Love your family, love your friends, love your neighbors, love your church community, but most importantly, love God. 3. Never fall asleep in the car with other missionar...

51: Double Socks And The Blundstones

Image
It's officially cold enough here to double sock it every day with my boots. When I got my call, I totally expected sweating my brains out in the summer, but I don't think I quite anticipated the cold. The thing is, the cold makes my brain think Christmas should be coming up. So I have been listening to Christmas music all week, haha. This week was a random conglomeration of fun events so here are some highlights. We saved a lonely, starved, cold, scared kitten outside the capilla and kept it in the pension until we could find a good home. We named her ROB and she loved climbing on our shoulders and purring. I kinda miss her, and I'm not even a cat person. We had an AWESOME technology council with our especialistas in person and the excitement was tangible!! So cool to be with all those incredible missionaries and receiving revelation. We had a blitz in our town where 10 missionaries descended on Carcaraña to contact as many people possible in 2 hours.  For the first time on...

50: Alejandra

Image
On Saturday, Hna Baldauf and I went to visit a woman named Alejandra. She was baptized about 3 years ago, but she had an accident that messed up her knee and hasn't been able to come to church since.  We stepped into the saddest cement block house I have ever seen. We met Alejandra, a woman with one of the biggest hearts in the world. As we sat in the only 3 chairs in the house, she unravelled her story to us.  Everything about her youth, life, marriage, kids, divorce, health problems, and financial struggles. She explained her son's drug addiction and the way that has ruined her house, her family, her finances, everything. She told us about how her glasses broke a while back but she doesn't have money enough to go get more. She bought a new phone recently, only to find she was swindled and was given a dud.  Even though she has next to nothing, she recently took in a woman named Carla who was living in the streets after her abusive husband kicked her out. While we sat and...
